During the ongoing Karachi Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the top four batsmen of the hosting side managed to score centuries each in the same innings to plunder 555 runs and help their side declare with a 475-run lead on Day 4 of the second Test between the two sides.
Pakistan opener Shan Masood scored 135 while Abid Ali hit his second successive hundred (174) as the two forged a 278-run stand for the opening wicket on Day 3. After Masood’s departure, newly-appointed Test skipper Azhar Ali (118) slammed his 16th hundred in the format. Then came 25-year-old Babar Azam, who took less than a session and 3 hours to score a 131-ball hundred as Pakistan declared soon after that.
With this, Pakistan have etched their name in the history of Test cricket as it was just the second time that the top 4 scored centuries in the longest format of the game. India’s Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Rahul Dravid, and Sachin Tendulkar were the first one to go past three-figure mark each against Bangladesh in 2007.
During the historic Rawalpindi Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka that ended in a draw, Abid became the only male player in cricket history to score a hundred on both his ODI and Test debuts when he reached three figures on the final day Test. Former England women’s player Enid Bakewell who played 12 Tests between 1968 and 1979 was the first cricketer (male/female) to start both their ODI and Test careers with a century.
