In the wake of the nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, three tech-savvy farmers from Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh are using online platforms to help other farmers to sell their produce.

The nationwide lockdown has posed a hindrance to several farmers across Uttar Pradesh, who are struggling to sell their produce. But these three tech-savvy, young educated farmers in Maharajganj district, who chose farming over corporate life, have turned this into an opportunity by selling their produce online using social media.

35-year old Varun Shahi after completing masters in computer application chose farming as a career of choice and is using technology to sell organic vegetables which are being produced by him at his farm in Gaunariya village in Maharajganj district in East UP with the help of his friend Aditya who is a post-graduate and Durgesh Singh, who has done MBA in marketing.

The lockdown may have come as a setback for the farmers in many parts of the state but these three friends are using social media to market the organic vegetables and fruits and sell it to traders in the district and adjoining areas.

Varun Shahi told India Today TV, “We are producing organic vegetables and fruits. Since the nationwide lockdown has come into effect, the vegetable traders are finding it difficult to come to us and purchase the produce. A WhatsApp group has been made by us and we have added all the traders whom we know in Maharajganj and adjoining districts. We upload pictures and visuals of organic farming being done by them. We have also created a Facebook page on which we keep uploading pictures of organic vegetables we produce. Traders are also being contacted through messenger.”
